Robbery in Karnaphuli Garden City: 3 arrested, 221 bhories of gold recovered

DB police arrested three men over theft of 700 bhories of gold ornaments from Karnaphuli Garden City Market.

A team of Ramna DB arrested them from Barishal and Dhaka on Monday.

The arrestees are Shahin Matubbar alias Shahin, 48, Shyshab Roy alias Simon, 35 and Uttam Kumar Sur, 45.

 

The policemen recovered 221 bhories of the gold ornaments from their possession.

AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), briefed this to reporters at DMP media center on Tuesday.

Early on December 18, criminals looted about 700 bhories of gold ornaments from Mohona Jewellers and Best and Best Creation Jewellers at the Karnaphuli Garden City Market at Shanti Nagar in the capital.

Later, a case was filed with Ramna Model Police Station in this regard.

The officer said that Shahin and Simon, who used to commit different crimes in their village areas, came to the capital for making a quick money by committing thefts.

They boarded at Kalpana Boarding in Old Dhaka and began to search for suitable locations to commit thefts.

 

The officer said that they finally selected Karnaphuli Garden City for its weak security measures.

On the night of the incident, the duo entered the market thorough an under construction building behind the market.

They opened an exhaust fan of a toilet on the third floor and entered the gold shops’ point.

They broke the locks and entered the shops, and looted the ornaments.

According to the police officer, some gold ornaments mistakenly got fallen from their hands on the road while fleeing.

Besides, they threw some diamond ornaments considering those as imitation.

The DB officer said that they recovered 22 bhories of the ornaments from the road after the incident.

He urged people that if anybody found the ornaments, they should submit those to police stations.

Otherwise, if police found those with anyone, he or she would be brought to book, he warned.

On the role of Uttam Kumar Sur, he said that he was a businessman of Tanti Bazar in Old Dhaka. He indirectly helped them commit the theft.
